It was a dry winter as we received only about 1/3 our average rainfall which limited our cover crop growth and our “green manure” soil nutrient program. Budbreak was mid-March for Chardonnay while Pinot Noir and Syrah waited until the end of the month. We only had a couple days of frost threat in mid April, but it only fell to the high 30’s.
It was a mild spring and Chardonnay continued to lead the way blooming in mid-May with Pinot Noir and Syrah blooming at the end of May. Summer was pretty uneventful with only a handful of days of 80 degrees F.
Harvest came early as we started picking Pinot Noir on August 29. We finished with our Pinot Noir on September 7 and went to Chardonnay and finished it on September 20. Syrah hung out for a while longer and we picked it sporadically through the first half of October.
